Within the framework of the Interreg IV project "Akku4Future" Fraunhofer Italia developed the technical basis for a diagnostic device for lithium-ion batteries, together with the Fachhochschule Kärnten, development agency Kärnten EAK, Treviso Tecnologia and the TIS innovation park.
This diagnostic device is capable to determine not only the current battery capacity, but also other variables which provide information on the functionality of individual cells. These additional information can contribute to an active recycling process, since batteries are composed of separable modules. As a first step, a fully automated measurement setup was implemented in cooperation with the Fachhochschule Kärnten in order to measure the functionality of the batteries at different ambient temperatures and different electrical load rates. In the next step, an algorithm was derived from the vast amounts of data. This algorithm can be implemented for example in the battery management system of a device and allows a real-time conclusion about the state of the battery.
The elaborated know-how is freely accessible. This includes the measurement concepts, their technical realization as well as the evaluation software and the implemented algorithms.
