Futterloch – Reduction of risks on farms

In South Tyrol there are about 20,000 farms, of which nearly 9,600 are dedicated to animal husbandry and hay feeding, but many of these farms do not have adequate security measures in the equipment stores and hay silos. In the project Futterloch, which was carried out in close cooperation with the South Tyrolean Bauernbund, Fraunhofer Italia studied different approaches to make work safer in drying frames and barns.

At the beginning of the project, the legal basis concerning the current safety regulations were analyzed and a survey about the existing safety problems on South Tyrolean farms was made. Furthermore, various types of cover systems of old, renovated and new farm buildings were examined. Based on the knowledge gained, ten practical solutions for higher safety standards were elaborated and a guide that helps to find the right solution for each farm was developed. All the developed solutions are characterized by their adaptability, simplicity, affordability and stability.
