In the project SMILE Fraunhofer Italia is working in cooperation with the Free University of Bolzano and the two Italian companies Mavtech srl and Arvatec srl on the development of a system for automatic data collection by use of remote-controlled aircraft, so called drones.

The aim of this project is to develop drones that can be used in the farming sector to enable a precisely predictable cultivation of the acreage in the near future. The measurement data of the drones provide information on the health of the plants and the soil and allow farmers to fertilize and to seed their land more precisely. Consequently, this technology helps to save resources and to contribute to environmental relief. In this way, drones can be used for better crop forecasts, detections of diseases, predictions of ideal irrigation and for the acquisition of additional data.

In this project, Fraunhofer Italia is responsible for the selection and the system integration of the optical sensors in the aircraft as well as for the finding of alternative application areas for the selected sensors.
