Process Engineering in Construction


The team “Process Engineering in Construction” explores concrete methods and strategies for the stabilization and optimization of planning and construction processes. The objective is to increase the productivity and the structural quality from the first draft to the finalization of the building, both in new construction and in renovation projects. The team adapts two research approaches: On one hand the organizational structure of construction processes based on lean management principles (avoid wastage, increase value) and on the other hand the implementation of innovative information and communication technologies to support the integral cooperation of all stakeholders in construction projects.



Retrofitting interventions in South Tyrol


KlimaKit tackles existing barriers in the sector comprehensively, to disentangle the factors preventing retrofitting interventions and laying the groundwork for an innovative model involving all actors in South Tyrol’s retrofitting market.



Ambient Assisted Living

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) refers to the use of new technologies in the home environment that aim to respond to the challenges emerging with the aging society. AAL can be defined as the creation of intelligent environments that adapt independently, proactively and specifically to the needs and objectives of users for support in their daily life. In particular, smart environments should allow elderly, disabled and / or not auto-sufficient people to live independently in a private setting.



Augmented Reality for Facility Management

The AR4FM project was born with the aim of creating a pioneering software ecosystem, which, using the most modern technologies, supports innovative operations of Facility Management (FM) through Augmented Reality. This visualization will be implemented through the use of mobile and wearable devices.



Laboratory for the digitization of BIM-based information in the construction industry supply chain


The research project BIM Simulation Lab aims to create a laboratory for the management and visualization of digital information to support the decision-making process in the design, execution (works management) and / or maintenance of a building.



Development of an open platform as an enabling tool for smart cities


The project is the result of Systems srl's initiative to design and develop a digital platform for smart cities, aimed at fostering the integration of new services for and with citizens, businesses, tourists and public administrations.

The project "MeranSmart: an inclusive and digital city" is an initiative of the municipality of Merano with the aim of making our city smart, intelligent and socially inclusive for the future.



3D visualization and augmented/virtual reality for the construction sector


One of the core businesses of Fraunhofer Italia is the devolopment of technological tools for digitization of the construction sector, such as augmented and virtual reality as well as internet of things, and the application of these tools on site.



Standardized implementation in public administration


Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an informative methodology that gradually simulates the planning and building process of a plant and combines 3D planning, scheduling, costs, supply chain management and materials as well as project and information management and maintenance. 



Collaborative management of construction processes


Building businesses, especially SMEs, are plagued by poor productivity. Comparing with the industrial sector, e.g. the ever-growing car industry, yields appalling results. Among the main reasons, we might point to the unsatisfactory degree of digitalisation relative to other sectors in the economy, which combines with a penchant for conservativism.



Assistant for Quality Check during Construction Execution Processes


Fraunhofer Italia started its first Horizon 2020 project with “ACCEPT”. The Consortium, which consists of twelve research partners situated in seven different countries in Europe, targets to develop an application for the quality check during energy saving refurbishment works to avoid eventual efficiency losses of energy saving components.

Method and tool for monitoring, controlling and optimizing international engineer-to-order construction sites 


In this industrial project, Fraunhofer Italia developed a method and a tool for monitoring, controlling and optimizing international engineer-to-order construction sites with repetitive and non-repetitive processes for the South Tyrolean company Frener & Reifer.



Efficient solution to the energy-oriented refurbishment


The majority of the buildings nowadays need an urgent redevelopment for a higher energy efficiency.  The project „RiFaRe“  faces these challenges: In cooperation with the TIS Innovation Park, the CasaClima Agency, the German Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP, designtoproduction and several industrial partners, Fraunhofer Italia is working on an efficient solution to the energy-oriented refurbishment.



Structuring and rationalization of the assembly procedure in order to avoid non-productive working hours


Twelve mainly small and medium-sized companies investigated in the cross-industry innovation network „Build4Future“ how the challenges of the construction sector in South Tyrol can be addressed. Rapid technological developments have been achieved within the last years.


Beton Eisack

Green concrete


Concrete was associated with many negative connotations over decades and accused with “construction sins”. In Cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP in Munich and the South Tyrolean company “Beton Eisack”, Fraunhofer Italia is working on a research project that aims to create a „green" concrete for ecological houses.



Timber building with enhanced energy and structural performance


With the project TimBeest Fraunhofer Italia pursues the overarching goal to define the current limitations and possible future applications of wooden constructions in Mediterranean areas taking into account energetic and structural aspects of these buildings.


Solar Decathlon

Energy self-sufficient house


Solar Decathlon is an architectural energy competition on which universities from all over the world participate. It pursues the goal to design an energy self-sufficient house by 2015. Thanks to the participation in the Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 Fraunhofer Italia had the opportunity, to take care of the design and to analyse the complete energy system of the house "Med in Italy".



Modernisation of an old country house built in 1928


The modernisation of the old country house owned by the society Cellarengo 2020 evoked some extraordinary challenges for Fraunhofer Italia since this renovation exceeded normal construction works: Main goal of the project was not only to restructure the building but also to redesign it in order to allow the use for social activities.
