With the project TimBeest - Timber building with enhanced energy and structural performance – Fraunhofer Italia pursues the overarching goal to define the current limitations and possible future applications of wooden constructions in Mediterranean areas taking into account energetic and structural aspects of these buildings.
TimBeest involves the cooperation of Fraunhofer Italia and of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Free University of Bolzano, while the Trees and Timber Institute CNR – IVALSA acts as an external partner. The researchers involved in the project study how to improve the properties of wood in the hot months without changing its structural and seismic qualities. In order to test the energy performance of buildings in a real environment, Fraunhofer Italia designed and built two prefabricated wooden test cells. In addition, cheap and advanced technical solutions for wooden structures, which are able to maximize the comfort and earthquake safety, have been identified. As a last step, the best solution has to be adapted to the particular environmental conditions.
