The DIGIBARREL – DIGital Integration to Bridge ARtisanal tRadition and Enhanced IoT soLutions project aims to develop an innovative prototype for wine production by integrating advanced sensors and digital systems into wooden barrels, combining artisanal tradition with cutting-edge technologies.
This project represents a breakthrough in monitoring and controlling the wine maturation process, enabling the use of IoT solutions to make both vinification and the maintenance of empty barrels more efficient and sustainable, while supporting the expertise of master coopers and oenologists in the winery.
The prototype will be developed through the synergy between the applied research institute Fraunhofer Italia, FOS, a specialist in digitalisation, Mittelberger, an artisanal leader in barrel manufacturing, and the Cantina Sociale di Bolzano, in order to combine research, industrial innovation, and sector-specific expertise, as well as the involvement of local producers. This pioneering project will help strengthen South Tyrol’s position as an international reference point for innovation in the wine industry.
